It’s 13:42 and the airport lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 is filling up. Happy holidaymakers shriek as champagne corks pop. Busy businessmen sip coffee while talking earnestly on their phones. I look around - this lounge is a true hub of connectivity, representing what makes us all innately human - our need for connection and discovery.
Alas, I am not sipping champagne. I am waiting to board my flight to JFK for a week of meetings on the East Coast of the United States before heading to Seattle to see my Microsoft colleagues at our global headquarters in Redmond. The next two weeks will see our newly formed L&D Leadership Team come together for the first time to explore our emerging strategy to support the growth of Microsoft’s Global Commercial organisation. It’s causing me to pause and reflect on what L&D’s role is in this new world of work and where the opportunities lie.
