Ireland's Ageing Workforce – Challenges and Opportunities

Workforces are ageing across many advanced countries. Falling birth rates and increased life spans will ensure that the average age of the working-age population will continue to increase. Given the pace of technological change and the transition to a more sustainable economy, the upskilling and reskilling of workers throughout their lifetime will be increasingly important.

 This is the subject of a recent OECD report which focuses on helping workers progress their careers or switch jobs when wanted or necessary. The study surveyed 6,000 employees and unemployed persons and 1,500 hiring managers in France, Spain, Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, Sweden, UK, and the USA. There are relevant findings for Ireland, given our current trends toward a more mature workforce.
